But what does that make me?

I had an ‘interaction’ with a customer last week that left a foul taste in my mouth.  She had come in to drop off paperwork and in her brief time in the office, put down three races.  My jaw was literally on the ground.

I ABHOR racism, homophobia, sexism – insert any other prejudice-ism here ____. You get the point.

She was a total stranger.  We were total strangers to her.  So that fact that she was comfortable using her vile descriptive ‘names’ she had for ‘them’ in front of us in a business environment was quite shocking and I knew, then and there, I did not like this woman.

She came back today – wearing perfume that was SO very cloying and … well, you know that particular ‘scent’ a perfume gives off when it’s expired?  Yeah, that was intermingled as well.

I got to thinking though – me sitting there, judging her and her nauseating perfume – was that any better than her judging others?

If she was a sweet, kind, non-racist person – would her perfume be any less cloying?  (Honestly probably not, it was pretty bad). OK, would I have tolerated her perfume if I hadn’t already decided I didn’t like her?

I really try NOT to hate.  I try not to judge.  I trust until I have a reason not to.  I love until I have a reason not to.

If her opinion came from ignorance, then that’s forgivable, and is it really my business?  She doesn’t need me to forgive her.  She doesn’t need me to like her.

In my opinion.

What she does need to do is watch what she says around me though, because I think that NOT saying something in response to words of hate is the same as condoning it.  I will, very professionally of course, say something.

Liebster Award – thanks Merbear!

Hey Merbear264 thank you for nominating me for the Liebster Award. 🙂  You can visit Merbear264 at her blog http://knockedoverbyafeather.wordpress.com/

This award is given to bloggers with less than 200 followers that a blogger feels should get some recognition.

Rules are, first, I am to thank the person who nominated me. (Of COURSE I would do that anyway!)  Thank you Thank you Thank you! 😉 Directions at the very end for my nominees.

11 things about myself:

2. I love banana flavored things, but not real fond of bananas.

3. I love cherries, but despise cherry flavored things.

6. Fluent in the old Italian finger spelling manual alphabet. (Signing)

4. Are you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning, or grumpasauras rex? I’m cheery – but my tail doesn’t bush until mid morning.

What about YOU? Part 1

I had come to the conclusion in an earlier post that something I love to do is learn about other cultures, and that one day I wanted to return to some countries I’ve been blessed to visit and share the experience with my son.

Thanks to a reblog, I’ve had hits from the U.S., England, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, Spain, Malaysia, Canada, India, Japan, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.  Here I have an amazing opportunity to get some perspectives from a diverse group!

You could say in some fashion my wish was granted.

So here’s part 1 of ‘What about You?’

There are so many questions I want to ask – but let’s start with some random ones.

1) Where do you live, and what can you see outside any given window in your home?

2) What never fails to make you smile?

3) What is the most common misconception about your country of origin?

Can not wait to hear from you.

Peace. x

Really US Embassy?

I have a blogging friend from Pakistan who went through the proper channels to try and obtain a student visa to come to America to further his education and earn a bachelor’s degree in English lit.  The Visa Officer at the US Embassy denied it.

This is after he had to explain why he wanted a second bachelors degree, who was paying for it etc. He provided bank statements, grades from his previous education. And, nope.  They didn’t think he would return to his home country after a school year.

I read this and thought, WTH??

This is a person whose father worked hard and can pay for the college fees (after saving up having taught in a village) and who did everything on the up and up.

Now, I am not someone who has a popular opinion when it comes to immigration – especially illegal.  I believe America was built by immigrants.  Founded by immigrants.  And I’ll tell you what, if I thought I could improve my family’s life by climbing, swimming, hiking into a Country of opportunity – I would!

Yes, there are a lot of people who take advantage of the services offered – but the problem isn’t so much those who do – but the fact that there ARE such services available to those who do.  In my opinion.

Fortunately I didn’t have to climb, sneak or swim.  My mother and I came here legally, we jumped through the hoops, waited out turn in lines and have enjoyed being residents of America since 1980.

When I hear a story like my blog friends though, I get a little pissed.

Anyone can sneak over the border but he can’t come here legally for education?  Not a free ride – a paid for education.  And really, if he stayed, wouldn’t that be America’s gain?  A go getter – an educated, creative contributor.

Grrrr.   Makes me so upset.

PostCartum depression

It’s back.

This should be me:

But this is how I’m really feeling:

I’ve decided I have ‘postcartum depression’.

I have not bonded with it.  I have not named it. If I heard it honking in the night, I’d ignore it.

I’ve been hurt before you know … a ridiculous amount of mechanical issues with multiple cars.  There’s only so much one auto heart can take!

I’m pretty sure I’m also suffering from post traumatic sticker shock.

She’s back from the shop and sitting out there, sans little scented visor tree.  😦  I did set her clock again – but really, is that enough?

It’s not her fault.

All I can think of is how much she’s costing me.  I have no desire to rush out and find her fun seat covers to swaddle her in.  No urge to find floor mats to gussy her up with.  Not even the slightest interest in finding her a new steering wheel cover.  None of the usual ‘I got a new car!’ behaviors.

I’m sure it will pass.  We’ll bond eventually.  Probably right after I make my last payment and right before she breaks down for good.
